British topography consists mostly of hills and plains , especially in central and southern England . The capital of England was formerly Winchester , later replaced by London in 1066 . Currently London is the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and the largest urban zone in the European Union based on area . [ Note 3 ] UK residents amounts to about 53 million people , or about 84 % of the total population of the United Kingdom , most of which are concentrated in London , South East England , regions and conurbations in the Midlands , North West , North East and Yorkshire , each region developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century . British Empire ( after 1284 also includes Wales ) is a sovereign state until 1 May 1707 . Later Unity Act which states that the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland politically united to form the Kingdom of Great Britain passed in 1707 . In 1801 , Great Britain united with the Kingdom of Ireland with the passing of Unity Act 1800 and later the name changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . In 1922 , the Irish Free State established as a separate Domini , but six counties in Northern Ireland still choose to be a part of the United Kingdom , which later changed its name again to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , which is the context of the United Kingdom known state until now.
